Subject: Adelaide soul nite report
...just finished a boring dinner with business clients........fed up now and can't sleep, so
i'll have a go at reporting on last Saturday's soul nite at the Duke of York in Adelaide.......
DoY is a pub with an upstairs room which is very similar in size + layout to the Carlton in Warrington (1978
style). in other words it's small, but this is just as well cos the Adelaide scene is still in it's infancy and they don't get a big turn out yet.....so with the +/- 30 people in on Saturday it didn't look that bad.
The main organiser is Pete Feven, originally from Manchester, but who emigrated back and to, and back again to Oz during the 70's and 80's..Pete's a 40 something who, amongst other things got to Wigan a few
times, and was (still is) an all round soul music collector...........anybody who has stuff like Debbie Taylor's "I don't want to leave you" and Barbara Hall's "Drop my heart off at the door" in
amongst a great collection of NS stuff gets my nod of approval.
The DoY is on every 12 weeks. Pete tells me they have had up to 70 at previous do's......a good smattering of ex-pat old soulies supported by
the local scooter club. some minor celebs who live in adelaide include Wayne and Alison......err forgot the surname, they are sweaties from Dundee, and the reason they are famous is 'cos it was Alison that won the
raffle at Wigan's 4th anniversary - prize being a trip to the USA with Russ W. A recent arrival - about 3 months ago, is a guy called Gary Byrne from the midlands - apparently dj'd at Keele...not a bad lad for a
Villa fan....although i'm a bit worried about his NS knowledge as he came up to me when i did my "record putting on" spot and asked me."what's that ??"......it was Billy Harner "What about
the music" !!! what on earth are they teaching these youngsters these days ??
Met another bloke who did a great spot - Bob summat from Poole, Dorset. Can't remember how long he's been living there, think
he said a couple of years. He played quite a few sounds that i liked but didn't recognise, apparently from the mid and late 80's.......

i guess most of these would be classed as played out oldies in the uk, but in adelaide they all sounded great and kept the folk dancing.......a reet good nite was had by
all.....'specially me. mrs orlovic's little girl seemed to have a good nite too.

ps - Pete Feven has got every Blues and Soul from 1973 to about 1985.......not bad eh ? but what makes it that bit
better is that he's had them all bound by a professional book binder........magic stuff.
