Southcoast Soul in Bournemouth - Dave Flynn

Arrived at Bournemouth at 9.15....in other words later than planned due to a rather sumptuous meal that took our good friends Alan and Malimo, along with my wife Chinami and my goodself, to get through........too many naan breads ;-) Anyway, into the Bug and I drove across from Shoreham to Bournemouth at legal speeds all the way officer. As I said arrived at 9.15 BUT it then took @ 25 mins to find a blooming parking space near to the venue as the town's night life was busy!

The venue itself is in a club called "Cagneys", which is situated beneath the Hilton Hotel.......all very nice and swanky inside (marble toilets for both sexes!). I was supposed to do my first spot at 9.30 (oops!) but on seeing Jo Wallace and Paul T-P at the decks when I walked in, I told them to simply carry on as there wasn't any point in me going on for 15 mins or so.....and besides they seemed to be enjoying themselves.....PLAYING A TOTALLY 70'S SPOT :-0

Spoke to a few internet folk.............not necessarily on this list, but Included the Brighton Boppers posse, who demanded I play certain discs as soon as I walked in...talk about getting your requests in quick, I hadn't even bought a drink at that point!

The place was very busy but fairly comfortable.......not a clue about numbers in.....150+ maybe more, whatever. Other knights of the turntable for the 2nd anniversary night were, local Ian Spittle, the afore mentioned TOS-ers, and Gavin Paige and Russ Vickers..............so plenty of experience behind the knobs and switches, for sure. Crowd stayed on the floor all night to a mainly 70's/Modern soul policy....all very uplifting and enjoyable.......I must admit that I was well surprised, yet delighted, to hear Lyn Collins' "Think"....always considered that more of a funk classic, but it went down very well. Other tunes that made an impression were Brown Sugar on Capitol, Gil Scott-Heron's The bottle, Ivan Matias, Four Voices, Two People, Danny Moore, Unique Blend etc etc.........right across the board and all blended well.

There was also a few discs for sale, which oddly enough I had a sift through, well you have to don't you..........bought a few bargains for sure....Brice Coefield issue for £80 (just for the resale value alone) and a robert Tennard for £5, to name but a couple!!!!!! ;-)

I went on 12.40 to 13.20 after Gavin had whipped them up into a storm. I must admit for the first time I was really unsure on what to play............more 70's, or be the 60's bloke for the night!?! Well, the choice was made for me as Gavin introduced me as his favourite 60's deejay at present (which was nice!). Well, considering the crowd was safely in the 40 something region on the whole I thought I might get away with a few Wigan and Yate classics, so this is what happened -

Bobby Reed - The time is right for love - Bell
Nomads - Somethin's bad - MoGroov
Greater Experience - Don't forget to remember - Colony 13
Jimmie & The Entertainers - New girl - Toddlin' Town
Ivorys - Please stay - Despenza
Shawn Robinson - My dear heart - Minit
September Jones - I'm with you - unissued Pied Piper
Sandra Stevens - If you really love me - JaWes
Precious Three - I need a man - Ref-O-Ree
David Rhodes - Hung up in mid air - Chi City
Ruby Andrews - A dream - unissued
Benny Spellman - This ones for you my love - Alon
Construction - Hey little way out girl - Sync 6
Soul Inc. - My proposal - Coconut Groove
Johnny Maestro - Stepping out of the picture - Scepter

Please note I did play the 70's stuff to "keep up with Joneses", and was very pleased to see both the Precious Three and David Rhodes go down very well indeed.........future monsters for sure IMO.

Russ took over for the final 40 minutes and kept things going nicely.....well it was an anniversary bash, so the atmosphere was great. The promoters, Jason and Nick told me that it had been their biggest attendance ever, and that the crowd was 60% local soulies and 40% travellers......they were pleased, as they should be.
