Sunday night was the big soul allnighter in Frankfurt. Jo and I had thepleasure being there as DJs. Here is a little review of that weekend.
I arrieved in Munich Friday morning coming in from Arkansas. Right after I got to my apartment I called Benji, who was just on is way back from the airport to Munich - with Jo in his girlfriendīs
Mini (very tiny!!! - Jo). So, they came over to my place, we had a little chat and went to go to the car-rental place to get our Audi for the weekend. A quick stop at the biergarten followed to have a late
lunch. Unfortunately, it was really only a quick stop for me. Lufthansa had decided not to put my luggage on the same flight that I was on from Frankfurt to Munich. It seemed to be much more convinient for them
to send it on a later plane and deliver it directly to my place in the afternoon.
Jo left again in the afternoon to go to Nürnberg for a reggae night (WOT A NIGHT - more Rocksteady and Ska than you can shake a stick at....Jo). She came back Saturday afternoon and we had
a little cheese and wine party at my place that night (more wine than cheese.....Jo)
We (Jo, Karin - Benjiīs girlfriend who was Djīing this weekend as well,
Benji, Toni - a friend of ours- and I) left at about 1pm for Frankfurt. We got to Gerhardīs (the organizer of that allnighter and one of my oldest and best friends) place after a four hour
drive. We could have got there much faster but these bloody smokers were whining all the time: "Can we have a cigarette stop?" (Oi - I don't smoke but the lollies are VERY nice and Joerg has the biggest
bladder in the world....am I sharing too much???.Jo)
We got to the club at about 10:30, the doors opened officially at 11:00. It was a really nice venue with two main rooms-one 60īs and one modern. About 20 or 30 people were already waiting
to get in at 10:45. It didnīt even take much more than an hour and the place was already quite full. Iīd say all together there were about 800 people that night (that's throughout the night and not all in one
go.....but it was SO HOT........and very sweaty....Jo)
Andreas from Frankurt was the first DJ in the 60īs room. It just took about 20-30 minutes the first people started dancing. When he finished his set at midnight, the dancefloor was already
quite full with 30-40 people. Gerhard was next and really packed the dancefloor with lots of Motown hits and uptempo soul. He threw in some great soul classics like Seven Souls or Anne Heywood, so it was just the
right mix that he played for that crowd. When I took over from Gerhard at 00:45, the dancefloor was packed and you couldnīt find an empty spot anymore. The 60īs room had already turned into a sauna at that
time. I tried to continue playing mostly uptempo to keep the people on the dancefloor. In my first set I played stuff like:

An attempt to play some midtempo tracks failed fully when I put Imaginations "Strange Neighboorhood" on. Half the people stopped dancing but continued when I put Jerry Naylor "City
Lights" on right after it. A girl approached me right when I played the Imaginations and asked me if I could play some soul music for a change! She thought itīs all easy listening that I was playing. That
happened twice to me that night (people are SO fickle......Jo)
Lars from Hamburg was next. I cannot recall any specific song he played. I just remember that it was good and I really enjoyed his set. It was hard finding some space on the dancefloor. I
managed it somehow to save me a little spot. Florian from Frankfurt played a big variety of soul, instrumentals and some latin. I went over to the modern room at that time and checked out what was going on over
there. The air conditioning in that room seemed to work much better, the air was actually breathable. I even started dancing to seome of the modern tunes that Jo was playing!
Jo was also next in the 60īs room after Florian at 02.15hrs. She played a really good set (aw shucks......Jo) and people enjoyed it a lot. I was always moving between the bar and the
dancefloor (no you weren't - you were staggering....Jo). It was so hot and humid in the 60īs room that I almost spend as much time getting my beer from the bar as I was dancing. Andreas followed with a very
short set. He wanted to talk to his buddies who came to see him that night, so he gave me half the time of his second set.
Gerhard would have been after that I would have closed the night with the last set. Instead, Gerhard and I decided to DJ together. We were at the decks from 4-6 am and it was just
fantastic! Well, at least I think it was fantastic. There were still at least 20 people on the dancefloor when we had to finish by 6. Some of the stuff I played:

I closed the night with The Dells "Make Sure". I am sure that the people who were still dancing at that time could have continued for another hour or so.

and I had a little breakfast at Gerhardīs place before we went to bed at 8am. We had a few hours of sleep before we headed back to Munich.
So much from my side about our little trip to Frankfurt. It is now Joīs time to write a few lines before we send her back to England. (and good riddance I hear them mutter.......Jo).
My night consisted of two sets in the modern room at 0.45hrs - 01.30hrs and 04.30 - 06.00hrs. For the most part, the room was packed with a lull round about 05.00hrs. The abridged
playlist for both sets looked vaguely like this (but you have to take into consideration that the crowd were really a rare groove/acid jazz crowd ......)

it was a long night but well worth the journey. On the way back to Munich, there was a storm to end all storms with lightening and rain that flooded the motorway (eeekkkk.......)
but we paddled our way back or rather Joerg steered us through the elements. The reggae night in Nurnberg was BRILLIANT but this isn't a reggae list but just to say that "Hypocrites"and "Wages of
Sin" plus a host of Coxsone, Studio One and Treasure Isle didthe business.........right, back to Blighty for some sleep.......zzzzzzzz.
