Soul in the Sun - Karen

Well just got back from the 2nd Soul in the Sun in Florida - now I must be up there with furthest travelled for a soul do - 2000 miles the weekend before last and 1100 this weekend - so over 3000 miles in 2 weeks for 2 soul nights - now I know some of Australian crew have travelled along way - but I must be up for some kind of award - don't think many of you have to drive 550 miles each way for 5 hours of soul - but well worth it. (Sorry Karen, but I think I can beat that, try the Las Vegas review, a group of soulies travelled to Vegas and then Los Angeles, we'd travelled from the UK, that's about 6 or 7,000 miles)  Anyone better that ? BERNIE

This time there was a lot more people actually in the pub, locals, not sure if they were there to listen to us or just there - but they were buying beer and as long as they did that we could keep playing and that was all that mattered. We managed to keep playing till after 1am so that was great.

I had a proper turn at DJing and had a great time, such a buzz having people dancing and singing and all excited at what you are playing - I think I could get used to this. Jan was up first - Chris Johnson next (ex KTFer) - (He gave me a copy of a song called Arise and Shine - the Independents on Wand - lovely tune). Then KTFer Malc Shaw - by this time I was dancing and really never stopped except when I was DJing and even then I danced behind the decks. Can't remember what they played, I am still knackered after my trip - but Jan played Cool Jerk for me, Chris played Bobby Hebb and Malc played something for me I am sure. Both Chris's and Malcs wifes being American thought we were cool all clapping in the same place. there were plently of locals in by this point - maybe even 40 or so - I think we were a bit of a novelty but I think they were enjoying the music - the odd toe tapping.

Then me - this time I had brought just 15 records with me - thinking it would be like last time and I wouldn't get chance to play much - but this time I did a proper set - 30 minutes anyway. I remember I played the following - nothing too expensive or rare - but all good and all vinyl. I
slowed it down a bit from what the boys played.

The Orlons - I ain't comin back
Tammi Terrell - Come on and see me
Supremes - He's all i got
Ike and Tina Turner - Dust my broom
Pat Lewis - Lets go together
The Sapphires - Gotta have your love
The Tymes - Here she comes

That doesn't seem like much - I must have played some more but I have forgotten. Next it all gets a bit crazy, all had too many beers - Pete who is the resident DJ at the club got involved - he was having a great time. He got up and DJed a while - playing some James Brown type stuff - good foot tapping stuff - not the best stuff for me to dance to but the locals enjoyed
it and a few of them danced. The more they enjoyed it the more than brought beer and we could continue to play. - they already extended it to midnight and then later they extended it to 1am - well worth playing to the crowd a bit. Not sure what happened next but the music was about to finish and no one else up on the decks so I went and took over - disorganizing Jans and Malcs record boxes as I went. Can't remember all I played, I was just franticly searching through the boxes for stuff I knew - but surprisingly managed to keep it together. I know I played, Bobby Paris - Personally, Bunny Sigler, Panic, and i even found a copy of The Snake that I played - left their boxes in a state but we had all had a few too many to drink then and it was a great laugh - had 50% of the soul crowd up dancing all the time (well 3 of them). we were all clapping, singing at the top of our voices - Malc and Jan were backdropping and all the extras - at least one or two of the locals were dancing to a couple as well!!! Great fun.Quote of the night - some guy come and asked (and it wasn't Jan) "what kind of oldies are these - have you got any Elvis" - well me and malc found Kim Weston Helpless and played that for him - he seemed happy enough.

All in all a great night, worth the drive, wasn't even spoiled by some brown uniformed, round faced 20 year old with a belly full of donuts and probably a full arsenal of automatic weapons in the boot of his car (traffic cop), who did me for speeding on the way down (146 dollars - fuck just how many records could I buy with that). Well he didn't even spoil the weekend for
me - or the fact I found out on the way home that I had lost my credit card (apparently i left it in the gas station I used it on the way up).

In a word or two - can't wait for the next one...................Karen
